Demonstrating Interest

Demonstrating Interest

Many students are so absorbed in the college application process that they may not realize colleges are paying attention to whether or not they are likely to attend if accepted. While it’s true that admissions officers are not mind-readers, they DO have many ways to judge whether your interest is genuine. Have you been following the college on social media? Have you signed up for their newsletter, opened their emails, contacted a particular department with specific questions? Perhaps the best way to demonstrate interest is to visit campus if at all possible. During application season, the vast majority of schools offer frequent tours and most host special preview days that allow students to spend more time on campus, interacting with students and faculty members, visiting classes, touring dorms, and exploring clubs and other programs. Most high schools excuse juniors and seniors for one or two college visits, so if at all possible, visit as many campuses as you possibly can. Of course, if you’ve applied to colleges all across the globe, you likely won’t have the time or funds to visit each. In these cases, be sure you demonstrate your interest in other ways by touring campus virtually (be sure to leave your email info), following their social media accounts, and reaching out to admissions officers at college fairs or during their visits to your high school.
